William George Dodd was born in Waynesville, Ohio in 1874. He received his M.A. and Ph. D from Harvard University. He moved to Tallahassee, Florida in 1910 to teach English literature at the Florida State College for Women. According to Robin Sellers, in Femina Perfecta, the president of the University of Indiana delivered the FSCW Commencement address in 1915. FSCW students wrote to that university for a sheet music copy of its Alma Mater to use in their graduation program. The students appealed to Dr. William George Dodd, Dean of the FSCW College of Arts and Sciences and an accomplished local musician, to draft a similar song for FSCW.
